Blindsided by Burnout


According to the American Psychological Association's 2021 Work and Wellbeing Survey, 3 in 5 workers reported experiencing negative mental and physical impacts due to work-related stress. Indeed (a job website) revealed that more than half of workers reported feeling "burned out," and Deloitte found that 77% of workers have experienced burnout.


It's a problem.


Some tell-tale signs of burnout are reduced energy, procrastination, exhaustion, and negative feelings towards your job. One client of mine talked about feeling "stuck" because while he knew he was burning out or close to it, the thought of looking for another job was daunting and a new career path would drastically reduce his income and standard of living.

But this is not just a "male" problem. In fact, a HIGHER number of women leaders (43%) compared to men (31%) felt burned out in one study I read.


While I don't have all the answers allow me to address one of the biggest reasons for overwhelming stress, crippling anxiety, overthinking and yes, burning out that I've seen over years of working with some of the best people out there, both men and women.


You see, in most industries we are compensated for results. It's all about the bottomline as they say. The bean counters are looking for an ROI (return on investment). So it's natural as employees and executives to focus on our actions, tasks, and outcomes. In short, we look to the externals of our life and work to evaluate how things are going.


The problem is our ability to be resilient in the unexpected, stressful and chaotic is all about our inner health, not our outer actions and results. However, since we are paid for the external, most really good people neglect or are blind to what is happening on the inside. Without the necessary self-awareness, emotional health and mindsets, six, seven and even eight figure leaders are blind to what could be coming their way. Burnout derails success and destroys confidence crippling any future endeavors.


I know this because I was a casualty as a high capacity leader and I lost everything as a result. This is why once I was able to get on the other side of all of this, I created an innovative, real world one-on-one coaching business where I could leverage my therapeutic masters degree in counseling with my 30 years of leadership experience. Unfortunately, I found I wouldn't be able help the majority of impacted leaders due primarily to my own time constraints and in some cases affordability issues with the leaders themselves.
